Reflective Blog 4,

The main topic of discussion in our class since our last Blog entry has been the professional industry and the associations that are present within these professional jobs. Our class has mainly focused on the surveying profession and has discussed the factors of what it means to be a professional in the surveying field. When it comes to being considered a professional there are many personal and business responsibility’s that must be met in order to maintain a professional status.

In the surveying profession it is critical that the land surveyor abide by the rules laid out by the professional organization. This guarantees the client has the highest standard quality of work.  The clients put their trust in the professional to complete the work to a certain standard, with a fair price tag, and represent them with the proper knowledge in legal systems. To ensure that these professional values are being met, associations are formed within the professional fields to regulate and monitor the practices that are being performed by working professionals.

These associations are often made up of experienced working members of the professional organization. They have the authority to monitor and correct or revoke membership of any professional member if they do not follow the professional rules set in place. As well as governing the practice of professional members the association will also aid the professional surveyors in the instance that a client would want to sue one of the organization members. This protects the professional organization from exploitation and ensures that its members are supported with legal defense.

Not only do professional associations represent their members in a legal stand point they also create opportunities for members to gain knowledge from other professionals in the industry. Associations often hold annual meetings in order to introduce new technology to its members and offer insight on changing industry standards. This gives exclusive opportunity to the members to gain personal knowledge as well as promotional knowledge on new products that may help their business grow. The annual meetings also offer a chance for professionals to gather and discuss current problems within the industry as well as issues that arise during the actual practice of the profession. I have been lucky enough to attend both the annual meetings of the Ontario Land surveyors and the New Brunswick Land Surveyors. This allowed me to meet and discuss with individuals not only in the Surveying profession but other engineering related fields. I was able to gain further knowledge on new technology and discover different career paths that past UNB graduates have taken.

Attending both the annual meetings and to have the opportunity to talk to professionals within the surveying field from both Ontario and New Brunswick first hand allowed me to gain personal knowledge about what it means to be a professional in the surveying industry. The surveying industry is actually quite a small community, professionals from different companies often maintain friendship’s with other professional’s for long periods of time. The annual meetings allow a chance to regroup and discuss business as well as reflect on past memories shared together.
