Looking back on the first few
weeks of the course and thinking about the different topics discussed in class,
many interesting topics come to mind. I’ve enjoyed the class discussions on the
history of land use and land tenure. Learning about ancient civilizations and
empires that ruled mass majorities of Europe is extremely important when trying
to improve or develop new tenure systems in modern culture. By being able to
understand how historic cultures ruled and viewed land use gives us the
knowledge and power to implement and discard of either new or old land tenure practices.
I particularly find it interesting how some empires/civilizations model their
own tenure systems after previous systems. These systems especially the roman
empire were the pillars of many different tenure systems and some practices are
still being used in modern society.
I have always taken an interest in
the development and the best use for certain parcels of land, so learning how different
land has changed in value through different historical generations is extremely
fascinating. I particularly enjoyed discussing the values of land in class and what
impact these land values had on society. Learning about the different ways land
was used in the past to make a profit strikes up interesting arguments between
classes in society in historic times and certainly modern times. High-class members of society may have different
opinions on how land should be used or how land should be delegated than lower-class
members of society. It is important to re-visit and understand the evolving
issues that surround our society today by understanding past disagreements and
how they were solved and if they can be improved upon. One issue that is becoming
more prominent within the discussions of local municipalities and even provincial
board meetings, is the issue of affordable housing. This is a classic case of
where lower-class people are being forced to pay higher rents due to various
influences and in turn having to pick their entire lives up and move to a place
that is more affordable to live. As Canadians we see this happening all over
our country especially in major cities like Vancouver and Toronto. This
residential movement is creating a boom in the housing market in rural cities. By
forcing people out of the core of major cities and into smaller communities, it
is causing some families in the rural cities to struggle on finding affordable
places to live. I believe it is important to provide all forms of housing for multiple
uses and different classes of people, whether it be apartment complexes or housing
subdivisions. By researching and looking back on how historic cultures dealt
with changing infrastructure and changing needs for the common people we as a
society must use this knowledge to stay ahead of future problems to come. In order
to accommodate the changing needs of society and to provide everyone within our
society proper and affordable housing.
With learning about historic land values
and land use it has provided me with the knowledge and understanding of how
ancient civilizations viewed and dealt with the problems of their time. This has
led me to view modern problems with a different perspective. For example, when
talking about the article detailing the Wet’suwet’en and the battle against the
construction of the new pipeline spanning from the western coast and through
their land, is something that I view as a major problem within Canadian society.
Both sides of the argument have valid points on why the pipeline should or
should not get built. I believe what the private contractors are forgetting is
to respect what the Wet’suwet’en believe and to realize they have an equal say
in where and how the pipeline should get built.
After reflecting on the past
three weeks of class I believe I have a new found appreciation and understanding
for land’s values and the way land is valued to different cultures throughout history.
It is important to understand the past in order to deal with problems that
might arise in the future and to deal with these problems in a suitable way
that works for society as a whole not just one class of people.
